THE GREY MOUNTAIN EXISTS. AND IT’S BEAUTIFUL

Every unpainted miniature has a story

The other day, we asked a very simple question on Facebook:

How many unpainted miniatures do you own?

And the war horn sounded.

  • Hundreds. Thousands.

  • Some of you have been collecting since 1982 and now own more than 7,000 miniatures.

  • Someone needed a spreadsheet just to keep count… until they lost the spreadsheet.

  • And in the age of 3D printing, we discovered that the Grey Mountain is no longer measured only in miniatures: it’s measured in terabytes too.

Of course, the tricks for doing the maths quickly appeared.

“If it has a basecoat, does it still count as unpainted?”

“If there are twenty miniatures on a regiment base, do we count twenty… or one?”

But reading all your comments, I realised that calling it a pile of shame is terribly unfair.

Because every miniature on that mountain ended up there for a reason.

  • Because we saw it and loved it. Because we imagined how we would paint it.

  • Because we opened a box excited to discover what was inside.

  • Because we printed an STL with a new regiment in mind.

  • Because we started another army when we probably didn’t need another army… or maybe we did.

So it isn’t the Pile of Shame. It’s the Pile of Glory.

The miniatures we chose, the ones we’ll paint someday, and the ones that simply make us happy knowing they’re there.

Because that too is part of the Golden Age of wargaming: falling in love with a miniature and starting to imagine.
