THE LEGENDARY HALL WELCOMES THE BEASTMEN CHARIOT KIT

REAL BONE. RAW POWER. PRIMAL FORCE.

Painted by Alan Bare (@bms.paint)

Today we have the honor of presenting the Beastmen Chariot Kit, painted by Alan Bare (@bms.paint).

A war chariot built upon the jawbone of a creature of monstrous scale, whose sharpened teeth form the very edge of the chariot itself.

This is what Alan tells us about his painting process:

THE FOUNDATION

“When I approached this piece, I wanted to achieve a realistic dulled metal effect.

I always start with a solid base. In this case, I used a brown undercoat — Hyrax Brown — to create a warm foundation to build everything else on.

From there, I applied a thin layer of white, being careful not to cover the recesses, building the initial light and contrast.”

BUILDING THE SURFACE

“Before introducing the metallics, I applied a dull metal pre-wash, using a mix of Contrast Medium, Basilicanum Grey and black ink.

Then I began applying the metallic layer using Dark Star Steel, working in thin layers to build up the surface gradually rather than covering everything.”

THE GRIME

“The key moment comes when I add the grime.

I use a burnt umber oil wash, thinned down to a wash consistency, and apply it over the surface.

At that stage, it looks too dirty, too heavy — but that’s intentional.”

STRIPPING BACK TO REVEAL

“After letting it sit for a while, I go back in and remove the excess using a cotton bud with white spirits.

That’s where the effect really starts to appear — dialing back the grime and allowing the underlying work to come through again.”

FINAL TOUCHES

“Finally, I pick out the edges and worn areas using a brighter metallic, such as Dark Star Bright Steel.

You can dry brush, edge highlight, or combine both, depending on the finish you’re aiming for.”

Thank you, Alan Bare, and welcome to the Legendary Hall.

It’s a real pleasure to see how a piece with such a strong design gains even more presence through a painting process so controlled and so aware of the material.

When the result doesn’t just look right… but feels right, you know you’re looking at something special.
