At Avatars of War, the Undead are much more than just skeletons.
They are the remains of fallen warriors who refuse to fade away even after death, becoming one of the hallmarks of our universe.
Orcs, goblins, barbarians, or beastmen return from oblivion without flesh, but with soul, keeping their personality and character etched into their bones.
MORITZ'S VISION
“My inspiration when painting comes from the art of John Blanche and the dark fantasy worlds. I’ve always been drawn to that grimdark tone, with desaturated colors and heavy atmospheres. For me, John Blanche —the artist who shaped much of Warhammer’s dark, baroque imagery— is one of the great visionaries of fantasy art. His dark, twisted, and detail-crammed style has defined the aesthetics of fantasy worlds and inspired generations of painters, myself included.”
PAINTING PROCESS
“To achieve this finish, I always start with a zenithal priming, applying light gray over black and finishing the preparation with a white dry brush. After that, I use very diluted base coats, using paints like Contrast, Speed, or Xpress, and then I add some highlights. But the most fun part comes at the end: enamel and oil washes. That’s when everything changes; the oils seep into every corner, dirty and age the miniature, giving it that dark, grimy, and rotten look I was aiming for.”
THE STORY BEHIND THESE BEASTMEN
“The idea for this regiment came to me while reading about cursed, swampy lands. In my mind, I saw these undead beastmen wandering aimlessly, like a forgotten spectral army that never found rest.”
The result is a regiment of Beastmen Skeletons that seem to march silently out of the mist, with their worn-out bones, rusty and chipped weapons, and shields rotten and corroded by time.
A dark and majestic vision that sends shivers down your spine.
